The UK's Ban On Disposable Vapes Will Be Delayed By Two Months

Nov 13, 2024 Leave a message

The UK government has officially announced that a permanent ban on disposable vapes will take effect on June 1, 2025, which is two months later than the previously stated date. This information was recently communicated by authorities in England, Wales, and Scotland. All disposable e-cigarette inventory must be cleared by June 1st next year, in preparation for the ban taking effect.

Cabinet ministers stated that the prohibition of disposable vapes is intended to safeguard children's health and mitigate environmental harm. However, e-cigarette industry representatives and experts argue that such a ban would drive consumers towards the black market, escalate the sale of illicit products, and adversely impact adults seeking to quit using disposable vapes, potentially leading them back to more harmful cigarettes.

John Dunne, the Director General of the UK e-Cigarette Industry Association, has advocated for more robust enforcement measures regarding disposable vapes instead of an outright ban. He proposed a licensing scheme for e-cigarette retailers aimed at deterring sales to minors and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Additionally, he called for penalties ranging from £10,000 to £100,000 for retailers and distributors who violate these rules.

Data shows that e-cigarette use in the UK has increased by more than 400% between 2012 and 2023, with 9.1% of the UK population now buying and using e-cigarettes.
